Honoring Helen: Nurse, Cadet, and Mother
Endowing a Professorship in Nursing Research

“Born and raised in Midland, Michigan,” Jane Lacher (BS 1975 Natural Science, Majors: Medical Technology and Poultry Science, and DVM 1979 Veterinary Medicine) notes her blessings with more than a few things in common with her mother, Helen Jane Wall. Both having attended Michigan State is one of the more prominent. Jane and her husband of 28 years, Ronald, decided to make an Endowed Professorship pledge of $1 million in the name of Jane’s mother to the MSU College of Nursing to create the Helen Jane Shortt Wall Endowed Professorship for Nursing Research.

Go Green, Go . . . Pink?
Komen Grant Funds MSU’s Pink Impact Breast Care Program

A grant to Michigan State University from the Susan G. Komen Michigan Affiliate is making a big impact—a Pink Impact, that is. MSU’s College of Nursing has received a $59,999 grant for an ongoing program that provides essential breast care services to uninsured, underinsured and low-income men and women in the community through MSU’s Pink Impact Breast Care program. The Pink Impact care team—a collaborative effort between MSU’s College of Nursing, College of Human Medicine and their colleagues across MSU—provides breast exams, screening mammograms, diagnostic procedures and community education. The MSU program has received Komen funding eight times since 2009.

What You Need to Know about the New Shingles Vaccine

Have you ever had the “chickenpox”? Most people over the age of 30 had this virus in their childhood. After a person recovers from varicella (chickenpox), the virus becomes inactive and lives along a nerve pathway. This Shingles virus, also known as herpes zoster, can resurface at any time causing significant discomfort. This pain is described as burning and painful when touched. In October, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) approved a new shingles vaccine, Shingrix®, for adults 50 years and older.
