Vaccines: What’s the Big Deal?

Since the late 1700s, the prevention of infectious disease has evolved. From the eradication of small pox to the current reduction of cervical cancer rates, vaccines have improved public health and decreased deaths related to infectious disease worldwide. There are reasons that healthcare providers discuss and encourage vaccines, especially in children. Illnesses that once were deadly or caused significant disability have been eliminated in the U.S. due to vaccines.

Vaccines are not just for Children. What is your vaccine status? Taking this quiz from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can help you know which ones you should have. Take the adult vaccine quiz. For children and adolescents, take the childhood vaccine quiz.

Palliative Care Advocate from the Bedside to Legislation: Q&A with Sarah Valinski

Sarah Valinski (CON BSN ’12) is transforming Palliative Care through her legislative efforts. She was first inspired to become a nurse during her sister’s cancer journey and witnessing how supportive nurses are in difficult moments. This experience is central to her work; wanting to improve the quality and delivery of care for patients and their families.

Valinski believes that advocating for patients goes beyond healthcare.

Funding Future Nurses

As a Spartan Nurse and having taught nursing students for 37 years, Dr. Martha “Marti” Engelke (CON BSN ‘71) knows first-hand how difficult it can be for nursing students to balance their schoolwork and jobs when faced with schooling and living expenses.
