As an R1 institution, the MSU College of Nursing is committed to addressing today’s most pressing challenges through its work in symptom science management, health promotion and illness prevention, and health services research.

Symptom Science and Management

This includes how to reduce symptoms and promote self-management across the chronic illness continuum, as well as conducting translational research for evidence-based interventions.

Examples of current research areas:

  • The feasibility and efficacy of online meditation training for caregivers of patients with advanced cancer.
  • Benefits of complementary therapies for symptom management among cancer patients.
  • Development of a toolkit to help cancer patients better self-manage their treatment and symptoms.
Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

This includes the promotion of positive behavior change and conducting translational research which empowers individuals, families and communities to reduce risk.

Examples of current research areas:

  • Use of apps to promote exercise in at-risk populations
  • Promoting adolescent exercise to prevent weight problems or obesity
  • The impact of stress on childhood obesity
Health Services Research

Health Services research explores factors such as funding, hospital systems, and individual behaviors on people's healthcare access, quality of care, and costs. Its objective is to comprehend healthcare's effectiveness and enhance it.

Examples of current research areas:

  • Evaluating the use of emergency departments and community-based services such as home care and skilled nursing facilities to shape geriatric care models and gauge the outcomes associated with geriatric-specific interventions
  • Evaluating utilization trends of ambulatory care services for individuals with mental health and chronic conditions and assessing the impact of policy and health system factors influencing care delivery by multidisciplinary providers
  • The use of population-level data to develop and validate predictive models, aiming to inform the necessity for geriatric assessment and advance care planning
