May 14, 2012
Michigan State University was selected as, one of only three universities in Michigan, to participate in the Jonas Scholars program for 2012-2014, with a $10,000 grant to support one PhD scholar.
Kelly Adams, PhD student, has been selected as a Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar. Adams is one of two-hundred and fifty Jonas Nurse Leaders from across the country. Furthermore, Adams is MSU’s first Jonas Scholar and has successfully finished her first year in the College’s PhD program.
“The Jonas Scholar’s program is aimed at increasing leadership potential of nurses, which will provide pivotal training in my future endeavors. I am incredibly grateful for all the opportunities that are advancing my career goal of becoming faculty in a research intensive university,” said Kelly Adams.
Adams plans to focus her dissertation on the emotional components of adherence in the congestive heart failure population.
“I have been incredibly humbled by the patience, time, and energy that so many individuals have provided. Having the opportunity to work with the faculty of MSU’s College of Nursing has been an honor in and of itself, as both a PhD student and as a teaching assistant,” Adams said.
Adams explains through assistance of numerous mentors throughout her education this accomplishment was made possible. “Strong undergraduate and masters in nursing programs have prepared me well for successful integration into a PhD program. Michigan State University has provided mentorship and always encouraged me to reach beyond my imaginations in career potential. Dr. Jan Brady and Dr. Kathleen Poindexter were influential, throughout my master’s degree.”
“In addition, Dr. Martha Scheckel has taken the time to mentor me as future faculty member. I certainly would not have progressed to the level that I am without faculty support. My faculty advisors, Dr. Barbara Given and Dr. Rebecca Lehto have taken extensive time this year in preparing me as a PhD nursing research student and aiding me in the grant writing process.”
The Jonas Scholars grant will be used to directly support Adams educational endeavors in the form of tuition, fees, books, and the 2013 Leadership Conference. Adams will receive $2,500 in four installments, over a two-year period.
