Academic Programs PhD in Nursing APPLICATION
Students are admitted to the doctoral program after completing a baccalaureate (fast track students) or a Master of
Science degree in nursing. All incoming students must meet the admission requirements of the University and the
admission requirements of the College of Nursing.
Required Materials
Applicant must submit the following materials to the College of Nursing, Office of the Director of the PhD Program:
1.) Applications for admission (College of Nursing and Michigan State University Graduate School).
2.) Statement of research interests and goals.
3.) Curriculum Vitae
4.) Transcripts of previous academic work (including appropriate level statistics course). A GPA of 3.5 or
above is expected.
5.) Three letters of recommendation. Recommendations must have first hand knowledge about your
potential for doctoral studies and research competencies in nursing.
6.) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores completed within last 5 years. Verbal, Quantitative,
and Analytic/Writing Assessment (after Oct. 1, 2001). Scores must be at or above 500 on Quantitative portion of the exam.
Review and Admission
Applications submitted by October 1 will be reviewed for an early admission decision. Applications submitted by January 1 will be considered in the second admission review; no applications will be accepted after May 1. Enrollment in the PhD program begins each Fall Semester.
Curriculum vitae, statement of research interests and goals can be submitted first. Transcripts, letters of recommendation,
and GRE scores are due before the applicant can progress to the interview stage.
Those with complete materials and meeting minimum requirements are invited for an interview with faculty and to complete a statistics placement test.
Applicants to the PhD program may also submit applications for College of Nursing scholarships and assistantships, fellowships or traineeships.
