The DAISY Foundation™ is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System).
The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired the creation of The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses, an evidence-based means of providing nurse recognition and thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurse Educators is designed to demonstrate appreciation to nursing faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their students. Nursing faculty have a profound impact on future generations of nurses and the patients they serve. These dedicated nurse educators are the early role models for nursing students in the art and science of delivering highly skilled care with compassion but rarely receive recognition for this influence.
The DAISY Foundation™ hopes that this program will contribute to faculty retention, faculty engagement, and a more positive work environment.
Nominations will be collected year-round, and honorees will be recognized each fall.
This award provides colleges of nursing a national recognition program that they may use to recognize and celebrate nursing students who demonstrate commitment to care and compassion and make the nursing-patient connection that makes such a difference in the healthcare experience.
