Michelle Gallegos, a BSN student at the College of Nursing at Michigan State University, saw the lack of diversity at the bedside and wanted to make a difference. Now, as the Breakthrough to Nursing Director (BTN) in the Michigan Nursing Students Association (MNSA), she is set to start making an impact in the state.
“I based my passion project in MNSA on Scrub Camp, a project aimed to showcase nursing to grade school students,” said Gallegos.
Gallegos’ is to increase diversity in nursing by introducing elementary students to the field through interactive and practical skills. Scrub Camps have been used in other states such as Iowa and Virginia. Gallegos is hopeful to start this program in Grand Rapids in January.
“My goal is to be a career model that aims for diversity. Starting with children, early exposure to diverse groups of nurses helps them to see that,” said Gallegos. “It's essential to start introducing so early to create welcoming environments in the profession.”
The programming for Scrub Camp has interactive elements such as applying personal protective equipment, checking for vital signs, CPR, and a crafting station for the students to create their own nursing badge.
“I joined MNSA because I wanted to be part of an organization where I could help communities around Michigan,” said Gallegos. “So, the BTN director position was the perfect opportunity to contribute with different communities across Michigan.”
Gallegos found a strong community on campus as a student leader at MSU. Gallegos is part of the Honors College, a member of the triathlon and running club, a part of the college’s Nursing Student Association as the community co-chair and is a research assistant here as well.
“I am extremely thankful for being part of MSU. I fell in love with this campus, and I will continue to carry that Spartan pride when I become a nurse,” said Gallegos.
