Krystal Owens receives Excellence in Community Building Award

MSU College of Nursing staff member Krystal Owens was recognized by University Advising for her leadership in building a supportive and inclusive advising community.

Summary

Krystal Owens, director and college registrar in the Michigan State University College of Nursing Office of Student Affairs, received the Excellence in Community Building Award from University Advising. The award recognizes leaders who contribute to supportive, collaborative and inclusive advising communities. Owens has served the college since 2016 and has led efforts to support nursing and pre-nursing students through advising, belonging and individualized student care. She has also established scholarship endowments supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds, students facing financial or personal hardships, and students affected by behavioral disorders or mental health challenges.

University Advising recently honored the Michigan State University College of Nursing’s Krystal Owens with the “Excellence in Community Building Award” during a special ceremony.

Owens, the director and college registrar in the CON Office of Student Affairs, was on hand to receive the award, which “recognizes individual leaders who have made outstanding contributions to creating a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive advising community,” according to the University Advising website.

“I am truly honored to receive the Excellence in Community Building Award. Supporting students and creating meaningful connections within the advising community has always been a passion of mine,” Owens said. “This recognition reaffirms my commitment to ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. I am grateful for the incredible colleagues and students who inspire me daily, and I look forward to continuing this important work.”

Owens arrived at the College of Nursing in 2016, when she started off as an academic advisor. She has also served as an assistant director of student affairs before ascending to the director role in 2021 on an interim basis and, in 2022, to permanent status. During her time here, Owens has been a champion for belonging, overseeing an office that often serves as the face or first stop for many new students, as well as those needing guidance in their programs.

“The Office of Student Affairs not only is a valuable resource for our nursing students at all levels, but also our pre-nursing students,” said Dean Leigh Small. “Krystal has done an amazing job providing care and individualized attention to the many nuanced challenges and situations that come into her team’s office, so it is fitting that she deserves this accolade.”

In addition to her student-facing role, Owens has also given back financially to the college through the Krystal K. Owens “You’re Not Alone” Scholarship Endowment, aimed at supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds, including first-generation students, students of color, and those facing financial or personal hardships. She has also established the Krystal K. Owens Recognizing Mental Resilience Endowed Scholarship, which will provide financial aid to students affected by behavioral disorders or mental health challenges, and those pursuing careers in psychiatric nursing.

Beyond her financial contributions, Owens is actively engaged in initiatives related to college access, diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is also dedicated to improving financial literacy and assisting foster youth as they transition into higher education.

“Krystal’s dedication to her profession extends beyond her job description,” said Phillip Seaborn, the associate director for student success and retention, who nominated Owens for the award. “She has consistently been a role model, serving as a source of inspiration and support for her colleagues and students. She is a passionate advocate for all students, working to ensure they feel seen, heard, and supported while creating an environment where everyone can succeed. Her leadership, integrity, and unwavering focus on student success make her a truly deserving recipient of the Excellence in Community Building Award.”
