More than 8,000 miles from East Lansing, Assistant Professor Rhonda Conner-Warren found herself listening to community leaders, healthcare professionals and educators in Tanzania, Africa to discuss a shared goal: improving health outcomes for future generations.
The visit was part of an exploratory international engagement trip focused on identifying ways the Michigan State University College of Nursing and other MSU units could collaborate with local organizations on education, research and community engagement. The itinerary included visits to educational institutions such as Paragon Montessori School and Sure Start Inclusive School, healthcare and research organizations including National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and GreenVit Health Initiative (GIVIT), and nursing education partners at Kairuki University School of Nursing and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) School of Nursing.
“While there, I focused on developing a better understanding of community and healthcare needs, exploring opportunities for collaboration, and learning about local resources and priorities,” said Conner-Warren.
“I gained insight into community-based initiatives, including organically managed farming practices in the region, and their role in supporting nutrition, health, sustainability, and community well-being.”
As a pediatric nurse practitioner, Conner-Warren found some of the most meaningful moments in the classroom, where she spent time with children and observed educators working to support students with diverse health and learning needs.
“I witnessed firsthand how the school embraced inclusivity while addressing the health and educational needs of their students. The experience highlighted both the strengths of these programs and the challenges they face with limited resources.”
Throughout the visit, Conner-Warren saw educators working closely with children who had cognitive and emotional challenges while finding creative ways to provide individualized support despite limited resources.
The trip also highlighted how relatively small resources can have a significant impact. Conner-Warren learned that equipment often taken for granted in the United States can be difficult to obtain in resource-limited settings. In some schools, access to tools as simple as a pasta maker could help staff prepare specialized meals for students with dietary restrictions.
Conner-Warren says she was struck by the reality that many individuals have limited access to rehabilitation and long-term care services following strokes or complications from diabetes. Although she said it was unfortunate to see, she said it was extremely important to learn about the healthcare challenges faced by communities with limited resources. She was inspired by the nurses developing creative community-based solutions and entrepreneurial programs to support individuals in their homes.
As she returns to Michigan, Conner-Warren says the experience will help inform her teaching, strengthen future partnerships and provide new perspectives she can share with students preparing to care for increasingly diverse populations.
"By working together across cultures and countries, nursing faculty and healthcare professionals can advance education, strengthen healthcare systems, promote health equity, and improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities worldwide."
Yet for Conner-Warren, some of the most meaningful lessons came from the children she met along the way.
“The moment I will cherish most was visiting a classroom of children with cognitive and emotional challenges. After spending time with them, several children approached me with smiles and simply said, ‘I love you.’ Their kindness, openness, and genuine affection were deeply touching and reminded me why I chose a career dedicated to caring for children and families.”
