The Nurse Anesthesiology program prepares registered nurses to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who provide anesthesia care in surgical, procedural, and pain management settings.

CRNAs are highly trained advanced practice providers responsible for administering anesthesia, monitoring patients during procedures, and managing pain before and after surgery.

This program is designed for:

  • Registered nurses with critical care experience
  • Nurses interested in anesthesia and perioperative care
  • Professionals seeking a highly specialized advanced practice role

In this program you will learn:

  • Admission Requirements
  • BSN to DNP (Nurse Anesthesiology) Admission Criteria
    • Submit a university application and résumé/CV.
    • Hold a BSN from an accredited institution.
    • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA (based on the second half of the BSN program).
    • Hold an unencumbered RN/APRN license in the U.S. or its territories:
      • Michigan RN licensure is required before clinical courses.
      • Out-of-state/international applicants may be admitted provisionally but must obtain U.S. and Michigan licensure prior to progression.
    • Maintain current AHA certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS.
    • Complete a 3-credit statistics course within five years
      (minimum grade: 2.0 undergraduate or 3.0 graduate).
    • GRE not required.
    Clinical & Specialty Requirements
    • Minimum of one year of full-time ICU experience (or equivalent) by the application deadline.
    • Submit CCRN (or equivalent) certification.
    • Complete and submit the Critical Care Experience Form
    Application Materials
    • Written essay outlining career goals and motivation.
    • Three professional letters of recommendation.
    • Admissions interview with College of Nursing faculty, upon invitation.
    • Demonstrate English proficiency, if native language is not English.
    MSN to DNP Admission Criteria
    • Admission is limited to advanced practice registered nurses who:
      • Hold a master’s degree from a CCNE- or NLNAC-accredited program.
      • Maintain current national certification in their specialty.

    Important Deadline
    • All application materials, including the Critical Care Experience Form, must be submitted by June 1.
    Out-of-State Applicants

    Students who reside outside the state of Michigan who are considering an online nursing program should contact the appropriate board in their state of residency to confirm whether the course or program meets requirements for professional licensure in the student’s state of residence prior to beginning a course of study. MSU has an up-to-date, state-by-state summary available online.

  • Deadline
    • Applications are available each year between April 1 and June 1.
    • No early admissions—applications are reviewed after the deadline.
    • Not all applicants are interviewed; selection is holistic.
    • Interviews typically occur in July.
    • Admission decisions are sent in September–October.
    • Deferrals are generally not allowed—you must reapply if declining a seat.
    • Cohort size: 20 students per year.

  • BSN to DNP Course Requirements — 92 Credits
    This program provides clinical, organizational and systems' leadership at the highest level. The nurse anesthesia program develops practitioners who design, implement and evaluate high quality and cost-effective health care services for diverse populations including the disadvantaged and underserved.

    For students starting Summer 2024 and later:

    NUR 905: Patient safety, quality improvement and quality management in healthcare

    FAQs

    What are the recent admitted class averages?

    Recent admitted class averages for GPA are around ~3.67 and for ICU experience about ~3.2 years.
     

    What type of clinical experience qualifies or is preferred? 
    • Preferred ICU backgrounds include: cardiothoracic, surgical, transplant, burn, neuro-trauma, medical, coronary, pediatric, and neonatal ICUs.
    • ER, PACU, cath lab, OR, and telemetry do not typically qualify, but applicants can consult admissions if unsure.
    • Pediatric/NICU experience is acceptable—no need to transfer to adult ICU.
    • Travel ICU nurses are eligible, provided they show consistent ICU care experience. 
    How can I strengthen my application to the Nurse Anesthesiology Program?
    • Shadow a CRNA and document the experience.
    • Retake or complete science coursework (especially if older than 5 years or grades were low).
    • Helpful subjects: pathophysiology, chemistry, physiology, pharmacology. 
    What is the structure of the Nurse Anesthesiology Program?
    • The program is a 36-month, full-time BSN–DNP.
    • Starts each May (summer semester).
    • Two phases:
    • Didactic (front-loaded coursework)
    • Clinical (simulation in semester 3 → full immersion in semester 4) 
    What is the student workload and schedule like?
    • Students are typically on campus 1–2 days per week; some courses are online.
    • Average commitment: 60+ hours per week (class, clinical, studying).
    • Some students work part-time/per diem early in the program, but it’s demanding.
    • No part-time track available. 
    Where do clinical take place and can I transfer credits?
    • Students rotate across 18 clinical affiliate sites with diverse cases and populations.
    • Accepted students may request transfer credit review, though limits apply.
    What are the costs, financial aid options, and relocation expectations? 
    • Program uses a block tuition model (fixed annual cost).
    • Financial support options include:
      o    Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
      o    Scholarships (state, national, college)
      o    Possible Nurse Anesthesia Traineeship grants
    • Estimated additional costs: ~$3,300/year (excluding travel/personal expenses). 
    What insurance, resources, and student support are provided?
    • Malpractice insurance is covered by the university.
    • Health insurance is required (student plans available).

    The graduate-level Nurse Anesthesiology Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). 10275 W. Higgins Rd., Suite 906, Rosemont, IL 60018-5603. (224) 275-9130. The program received the maximum 10 year accreditation in 2025 and is scheduled for its next review in 2035.
