Day in the life with Mabel Phillips

As seen on trending tabs of TikTok and Instagram Reels, people are curious what a nurse’s typical day looks like. Mabel Phillips, a current undergraduate nursing student, gave the Spartan community a peek at what it’s like to be a Spartan Nurse.

Phillips, a senior nursing student, is president of the MSU Nursing Student Association (NSA), while also guiding the college from the student perspective on the Student Advisory Council. During her takeover of the college’s Instagram, Phillips was getting ready for an NSA meeting.

“Since my clinical in pre-labor and delivery starts next week, I can sleep in today,” stated Phillips, sleeping in for her meant not getting up until 9 a.m.

After picking up the name badges for her club, she sat with fellow students in a Starbucks to study and work on homework together.

Running the takeover on Instagram allowed Phillips to use the question-and-answer feature through the application. She answered several questions from pre-nursing students.

Q: Would you recommend Michigan State University for nursing?

A: “A million times yes!  I wouldn’t want to go to nursing school anywhere else. I am so grateful for the opportunities that being a Spartan nurse has provided me.”

Q: Do you feel like MSU is too big? I am debating whether or not to attend here.

A: “Not at all. I continue to be surprised at how much smaller it feels to me than I thought it would. Especially being in the College of Nursing, it is so nice to be with the same students throughout the four years!”

After a successful NSA meeting, Phillips headed home to prepare for her Medical Surgical clinical for the next day. She relaxed after her nightly chores by watching “Dancing with the Stars” and reflecting on her MSU experience.

“MSU is the best school in the world, and you cannot convince me otherwise!” stated Phillips.
