The Michigan State University College of Nursing will have a strong presence at the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s 47th Annual Research Conference later this month. This is the premier regional nursing conference in the Midwest and brings in over 900 participants a year.

“We are excited to announce that 20 of the presentations at the conference will be by MSU faculty and students,” said Dr. Susan Buchholz, associate dean for research. “We also have two faculty, two doctoral students, and one undergraduate student receiving awards this year at the conference. We look forward to presenting on behalf of the university, and meeting up with other nursing researchers.”

For doctorate of nursing student Wachira "Kellen" Suriyawong, this opportunity to connect with other nursing researchers helps him advance his current and future research.

“The MNRS helps me as a PhD student learn how to professionally conduct research and network,” said Suriyawong. “We can offer ideas on each other’s research and create a network to work together in the future.”

Suriyawong’s research focuses on young adults in Thailand with high blood pressure and investigating the causes of hypertension. Suriyawong will be receiving the MNRS Dissertation Award, which is a grant that encourages research that advances nursing science and practice.

“The funding that I received from MNRS for my research helps eliminate barriers that were in my way,” Suriyawong stated, “Finding 330 participants and then traveling to Thailand for the data collection can be expensive, but with the grant I can confidently conduct my research.

“I’m glad to have not only received this grant, but I’m also glad to have such a strong network of nursing colleagues in the MRNS,” Suriyawong said.
