Spartan Nurse Perspectives: Turning holiday stress into seasonal joy

As we approach the holidays, many people find themselves struggling with conflicting emotions. Amidst the holiday decorations and festive cheer, stress can overshadow the joy of the season. The following recommendations may help you connect with the joy of the holidays and the magic of the season. 

Set Realistic Expectations 

The pressure to create a perfect holiday can lead to stress and disappointment. Be realistic about what you and others truly want. Talk with family and friends before planning elaborate parties or meals and consider new traditions that require less time and effort, allowing more time to enjoy each other. 

Practice Self-Care 

Self-care often takes a backseat during the holiday season, yet it is important to make it a priority. Set aside time each day for activities that help you relax and recharge. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep are essential for your health and wellness. 

Cultivate Gratitude and Positivity 

The holiday season is a perfect time to reflect on what you are grateful for. Research has shown that practicing gratitude can shift your focus and reduce stress. This does not have to be a difficult task. Many people recommend ending your day by writing down three things you are grateful for. These can be big or small, but they can make a significant difference in how we feel. 

Foster Connections and Seek Support 

It is extremely important to stay connected during the holidays. Rather than worrying about the perfect gift or party, reach out to friends and family to share your feelings and express your appreciation for them. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or support if you are struggling. Sometimes, considering professional help — talking with a counselor or therapist — can provide valuable insights and coping strategies. 

Let Go of Perfectionism and Embrace Imperfection 

Some of us are more prone to perfectionism than others, but the holidays seem to amplify this tendency in all of us. Consider embracing your flaws and mishaps that occur and try to find humor in them. Allow yourself to be present in the moment and enjoy those around you. 

In summary, you can make this holiday season special by taking time to plan ahead, setting realistic expectations, practicing gratitude, fostering connections, and embracing imperfection. You have the opportunity to fill your heart with the warmth and joy of the holidays. Set a good example for family and friends, stay positive, and don’t let the wonderful moments get lost in the hustle and bustle of the season. A small random act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
