College of Nursing honors summer graduates at pinning ceremony

The College of Nursing proudly celebrated its summer 2025 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduates during a special pinning ceremony earlier this month at the Kellogg Conference Center. The event honored 60 newly pinned Spartan Nurses, marking an important milestone in their transition from students to professional nurses.
The pinning of graduating nurses is a time-honored tradition rich in symbolism. It dates back to the 1860s when Florence Nightingale (the founder of modern nursing), was awarded the Red Cross of St. George in recognition for her tireless service to the injured during the Crimean War. Often more personally meaningful than the graduation ceremony, it signifies a graduate’s official initiation into the nursing community.
This summer’s celebration began with an unexpected twist—a fire drill interrupted the ceremony moments after it started. Guests and graduates calmly evacuated before returning to continue the program with smiles and laughter, creating a memorable start to the day.
In addition to the pinning, the college recognized students who demonstrated exceptional achievement and leadership during their time at MSU:
The Outstanding Student Award
This award honors graduates who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in the areas of academic excellence, clinical practice, and leadership throughout their time in the program.
ABSN Outstanding Student Award Recipient: Joe Price
Spirit Award
This award is presented to a student who has gone above and beyond to uplift their peers—motivating and inspiring classmates to embody the College of Nursing’s mission while fostering a sense of community and positivity throughout the program.

ABSN Spirit Award Recipient: Paulita Beute
Dean Leigh Small expressed her pride in the graduating class, describing them as “very well educated, hardworking and dedicated to optimal health care of each one of their patients.”
"You are determined to make a difference and I’m certain that you will," she said. "The faculty, staff, and I could not be prouder of the summer 2025 graduates.”
As these 60 newly pinned Spartan Nurses embark on their professional journeys, they carry with them the skills, knowledge, and resilience fostered during their time at MSU—ready to make a difference in the world of health care.
