Students Step Up for Spartans Serve Week
As part of Spartans Serve Week, the Michigan State University College of Nursing collected donations for two Lansing-area non-profits: Angel House and City Rescue Mission, Angel House’s mission is to strengthen and support children, families, and individuals as they evolve and grow in a changing community. The City Rescue Mission of Lansing is a 501(c)3, Christian ministry where every year, thousands of women, children, and men find refuge and rescue thanks to the compassion of our community.
Many students, faculty, and staff used this week in September for service as a chance to give back to their community. However, student Imari Toney went above and beyond by donating countless supplies such as diaper, bottles, pillows, gloves and many more essential items to help families in need. Toney knew she had to take advantage of the change to help her community, using it as an opportunity to learn more about the organizations that serve men, women and children in the Lansing area.
“I was really blessed as a child to not go without things that I wanted or needed. In being so fortunate, my parents instilled in me at a young age to give unto others whenever I am able,” Toney detailed. “As an African-American woman who grew up in an underserved and underrepresented area, I understand how the need of a community can oftentimes go unmet.”
When asked about Spartans Serve Week’s relation to her studies, Toney didn’t hesitate to reply. “The field of nursing doesn’t stop in the hospital or clinical setting but expands well beyond that. We are going into a field where we advocate for people and ultimately make an impact in their life, and this is no different.”
